Whether
your interests lie in molecules, cells, systems, engineering or computational
technologies, our Ph.D. programs offer many flexible, interdisciplinary
research opportunities. As might be expected in a time when research is
more and more a collaborative venture, these programs include faculty
from throughout the University. For example, the Bioengineering Ph.D.
program is housed in a newly created Department of that name which is
comprised of faculty from both the Schools of Medicine and Engineering.
The vast majority of our programs (all but Bioengineering and Biomedical
Informatics) participate in a joint admissions process. Once at Stanford,
students entering through this joint process start in one of the twelve
Biosciences PhD Programs (their “home” program). During the
first year students complete between two and four laboratory rotations
which can be in any lab inside or outside the home program. Upon finishing
these rotations and in conjunction with the relevant faculty committees
students choose a dissertation lab and then make a final decision as to
which of the twelve programs is the best fit with their interests.
