The goal of our program in general pediatrics is to make comprehensive care available to children in our community. Our particular commitment is to meet the health needs of children who have been traditionally underserved, helping to create a health care safety net for the children of communities to the north and south of LPCH. In addition to our clinical responsibilities on the Infant-Toddler and School Age units and in the ambulatory care clinics at LCPH, we care for infants in the Well Baby Nursery at Stanford University Hospital.

The general pediatrics division also has a primary role in the education of future pediatricians, both students from the School of Medicine and interns and residents at LPCH. Teaching people how to look after the wellbeing of children is challenging. The next generation of pediatricians must not only be able to deliver comprehensive and cost-effective patient care. They must be able to identify and address the underlying physical, behavioral, social and environmental causes behind the critical health problems faced by infants, children and adolescents today. Guided by a strong ethic of social responsibility, the division supports a number of community-based programs such as the Family Advocacy Program (FAP), which provide hands-on learning to equip our trainees with the skills they'll need as future advocates of children's health.

In order to support its primary missions, the general pediatrics program is actively involved in research related to medical education, health services and prevention. Evaluating new methods for training pediatric physicians is fundamental in the changing health care environment. Health services research focuses on how to give high quality, low cost care to children. For example, we are studying the care of infants who are at risk because of social as well as medical vulnerability. School-based programs deal with prevention of obesity, accidents, substance abuse and cancer and with identifying the special health needs of minority children.
