Ramsey Cheung , M.D. Stipends and other benefits Clinical stipends for the first year are paid at the postgraduate year (PGY)-4 training level of ~$55,000 for 2005-2006. In the research years (second and third years of the fellowship), trainees who receive NIH training grant stipends are paid at the appropriate PGY level on the NIH scale. Thus, the stipend for a typical PGY-5 trainee (second-year fellow) is currently ~ $47,000 which is usually supplemented by laboratory funds of their mentor. As funding for the second and third years may come from distinct sources, it is not possible to insure that all fellows receive identical pay. For all NIH-funded grants, the payback clause is in effect and a statement of non-delinquency of federal debt is required. Each first-year fellow is given three weeks of vacation, with no more than one week taken on a given rotation. In subsequent years, three weeks of vacation are also given, with arrangements for the timing of vacation being made with the specific mentor. Fellows are responsible for arranging appropriate coverage for their clinical commitments during the vacation. Health insurance is provided for each fellow. Dependent coverage is also available and may require a copayment by the fellow. Maternity leave benefits are identical to those offered to Stanford medical housestaff. There is also a possibility of a moving allowance benefit as each trainee begins their fellowship. Educational program Although each hospital conducts its own educational program, there are a number of activities for the Division as a whole. Fellows take an active role in the weekly GI Clinical Conference, with the assistance of a faculty member. Approximately once a month, each first-year fellow prepares one or two representative cases. Second- and third-year fellows are called upon to discuss the cases before the faculty, trainee group and community gastroenterologists. Following the discussion, the first-year fellow provides a brief review of the literature relevant to the case. Fellows and faculty also participate in a weekly Journal Club held at Stanford. There is also a research conference, and fellows participate in joint radiology/surgery/path conferences. In addition, fellows and faculty meet quarterly to discuss various aspects of the program, in an informal atmosphere. Fellows are periodically apprised of their progress and have a regular opportunity to evaluate the quality of their educational experience. Application forms Please note - the deadline date for Bench Research Applications has CHANGED - it is now: December 1, 2005. |
